Simple Wardrobe Staples For The Semi-Experimental Dresser

I never used to feel like I had a grasp on what I wanted my “aesthetic” to be; I’m sure everyone has experienced this. Whenever I’ve tried committing to one particular style, I quickly became bored trying to keep up with what I had thought I wanted to look like. I had many a days that I literally just… threw out my entire closet. Sick of the tribulations of getting dressed in the mornings, I would get rid of everything and start from scratch.

It wasn’t until recently that I realized I never had to do any of that, so many times. On the days that I feel like a different, or even new person, why not dress like it? I don’t have to trap myself inside of a box based off of what I think I want other people to perceive me as when they up-and-down the outfit that I had plucked from my clothing rack earlier that morning.

I dress for myself and who I want to be that day, week, or month—and from my newly colorful, texturous, and tastefully-chaotic wardrobe, I have compiled a list of items that bring it all together. These clothing items are my “staples,” and what I have found to be constants in my wide range of ever-changing outfit choices -- the ones I’ll never throw away:

the ~fancy~ blouse

Color and style/pattern is up to the dresser. White is easy -- you know, those cute white blouses that look like doilies. I’m also a sucker for a good silk button-up blouse. Something easy to put on when you need to dress up, or just when you’re feelin’ it.

the blazer

I have some fitted and some over-sized; blazers are good for layering. They’re perfect for throwing over a dress in place of a light jacket, and for more androgynous looks: a t-shirt and jeans. Maybe throw a pair of cowboy boots in the mix…

the cowboy boots

Cowboy boots are amazing and I encourage everyone to try at least *some* version of a western-style boot. With a dress? Adorable. Jeans and a t-shirt or sweater, easy. They also have the same fun click-clack as a high hell does without the constant fear of toppling over.

the cardigan

Cardigans have made a comeback, and rightfully so. There are so many ways to wear one! I’m a big fan of the very 90’s-esque style of a cropped/mini cardigan worn as a top. Also love a good grandma moment with an oversized knit one.

the good jeans

Good! Quality! Jeans! Simply cannot be beat. Obviously we all have more than one pair, so I like to make sure I have one form fitting and one more loose, “mom,” or “boyfriend” fit. It’s always good to start off with a classic blue jean wash.
